Maybe the perfume was something really horrible, and it looked like the bottle might break, and the men were willing to sacrifice themselves by throwing themselves upon it as if it were a live grenade, so as to save the others.  Yeah, right.  (And as they threw themselves to the aid of the "damsel in distress" a pregnant woman and an old man with a cane stood by the door wondering if anyone would give them a seat).
